Hataya sensei's Visit
Hataya sensei's visit went great and without a hitch. We now have two seizan kai shodan's in our dojo now. By July hopefully more. Thank you everyone for your help and participation. This is for the guys who tested
Henry -
a) yama, and sui hei was not flat
Daiki -
a) angles were steep and sui hei was not flat, rocked the stand a bit
Dan -
a) although you passed, at westchester you needed to control yourself more. Calm down
Ron -
a) good cuts, good composure.
Insight into the techniques I had to do
1) Yokonarabi
a) You have to cut across, not that steep or you run out of space for the second cut.
b) You REALLY have to keep the edge down as you guys saw
2) Futomaki
a) no different from yokonarabi but rather but you want to use more of your blade. Say about half
3)Mizu gaeshi
a) first cut steep and all the way up!
b) keep the tip weight "alive" for that return cut and use your hips!
c) the sui hei can easily be turned so follow through the cut before you start turning
4) Daruma Otoshi
a) Gotta place that first nukitsuke good or you won't have space for the sui heis
b) It's good to stay far, the more you reach with your sui hei's at a higher level, the straighter it will be
c) don't let the momentum stop
5) Mother F*in Tombo
a) follow through the first cut before winding
b) *for me* cutting shallow works better
c) 70% in your first cut and the 30% in the following cut
d) HIPS HIPS HIPS!
Testing was hard, but everyone tried their best! I'm proud of the effort and composure that everyone put on! For those who didn't pass *raises* hand, let's train hard to get it next time! For those of you who passed, now you have new techniques to work on but don't forget the basics, because those are the building blocks for the rest.
